SOO Visual Arts Center, A New Breed of Watercolor
Jun 5, 2009

A New Breed of Watercolor challenges preconceptions, focusing on artists that put their own unique twist on the medium. Always eager to break with tradition SooVAC proudly presents the watercolor work of Serena Cole, Keren Kroul, Margaret Pezalla-Granlund, Lindsay Smith and Betsy Walton.  This exhibition is not demure landscapes or lovely seaside vistas; these artists use watercolor techniques to depict enigmatic narratives, architectural landscapes and eerie portraiture. Their art exploits the delicate nature of the medium, while subverting expectations and ignoring tradition in order to create uniquely beautiful work that presents compelling questions.

Junc Gallery, APAK, Aya Kakeda, Betsy Walton
Nov 15, 2008

In the tradition of the best folktales Apak, Betsy Walton and Aya Kakeda have the ability to manifest familiar experiences and truths in an updated adaptation that include elements of pop culture, illustration, Asian and European folktales presented with well developed personal vocabularies. The results vary based on each artists own agenda but the commonality is contemporary illustration that is well conceived and visually arresting.

Lab 101, Winter Is Coming
Sep 1, 2008

These paintings explore the idea/destination/ideal of Paradise. Imaginary dream state environments join stylized elements from the natural world and everyday life. Themes of transformation, duality, searching, and abundance are rendered with an aesthetic rooted in Byzantine iconography, American folk art, contemporary figurative illustration, and geometric ornamentation.

Rare Device, Sacred Spring
May 1, 2008

These paintings for Rare Device depict iconic characters experiencing quiet moments of transcendence in settings inspired by forests, backyard swimming pools and grassy riverbanks. I use an experimental approach to rendering the narratives, loosely incorporating diverse formal elements such as collage, hand drawn patterns, pencil drawings, and layered brushwork.
